Obesity – More than Just Weight

Understanding Obesity is more than just weight.

Have you ever wondered why obesity has become such a pressing health concern in our modern world? Let’s dive into this complex health challenge that affects millions globally.

Think about this: obesity isn’t just about carrying extra pounds – it’s an abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that poses significant health risks. Here’s the fascinating part, you’re considered obese when your weight exceeds 20% of your Ideal Body Weight or when your Body Mass Index (BMI) crosses the 30 kg/m² mark.

But here’s where it gets interesting – obesity comes in different “sizes.” Medical experts categorize it into three classes:

– Class 1: BMI 30-34.9 kg/m² (think of it as the entry level)

– Class 2: BMI 35-39.9 kg/m² (the middle ground)

– Class 3: BMI >40 kg/m² (the most severe category)

Now, you might be thinking it’s all about diet and exercise, right? Well, not exactly. The story behind obesity is more like a complex puzzle. Your genes play a part, your psychology matters, and yes, your environment and lifestyle choices are significant pieces too. Here’s a surprising fact: even head trauma affecting the hypothalamus can impact leptin, a hormone that controls your appetite!

The consequences are pretty serious. Picture obesity as a domino effect – it can trigger a cascade of health issues, from cardiovascular diseases to type 2 diabetes, and even certain types of cancer, and I know for sure nobody wants to develop all these.

But here’s the good news, there’s hope in managing obesity effectively. Remember, everyone’s journey is different. That’s why obesity management isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. It requires a tailored approach that considers your unique needs and circumstances, it’s about recognizing its complexity and approaching it with comprehensive, personalized strategies for the best outcomes. Mrs. Victoria, a mother of three, approached me after a health seminar saying “ I have two questions for you. I remember you saying that a lot of people eat to die, how can that be? How can our food be balanced since most of our foods are starchy? I really want a change in my diet” I replied “You need to see a dietitian-nutritionist”

We need to understand that every time you eat or drink, you are either feeding a disease or fighting it. Those who think they have no time for healthy eating will sooner or later have to find time for illness. What you eat, the time you eat and quantity has a part to play in your daily lives.

The “Food Pyramid” according to WHO indicates whole nutrition in different percentages ranging from whole grains to fruits & veggies to protein types, down to carbs and fat. In the course of work, poor eating habits involving Fast food intake, forgetting/skipping meals, excessive coffee intake, constantly picking at foods and Fad dieting have become part of our daily lives.
